KULLU – MANALI
The valley of gods
Enclosed by
the first two snow ranges of the Himalayas – the Dhauladhar
and Pir Panjal – is a valley that leaves the spectator awe
struck with the breath taking grandeur of its mountains, its
torrents and its vast expanses of snow in its upper regions.
To its East, West and North are ostentation of pinnacles and
ridges, which in fine weather stand out in bold relief against
skyline. Manali is situated at an altitude of 1926 meters and
spreads in some 15 square kms. (Valley floor). The original
name of Manali town area was ‘Dana’, Later it become
‘Duff Dunbar’ named, presumably, after one of the
original European resident of Manali. But the original and old
village of Manali is located beyond the Manali town, higher up
the valley across the Manalsu River. The inhabitants of this
village prefer to retain their secluded identity. According to
Puranas, the place where Manali village is situated, the great
Hindu lawmaker Maharishi Manu, after the great deluge,
first stepped on the earth from the celestial boat. Manali is
regarded as the changed name of ‘Manu-Alya’, the home
of Manu. It was here that the human race came into being after
the deluge. A small temple dedicated to Maharishi Manu
still exists in the village of Manali.

The land
offers tremendous seasonal variety. After long winter as sun
gets back its bright and cheerful smile, the frozen streams
and lakes melt in to flowing laughter. The life starts to teem
up again. The hills and dales start covering with a velvety
cloak of tender green. The breeze is laden with the fragrance
of joy and freshness. Yes, this is the joy of spring
which, on maturity, brings with it profusion of blossoms that
add colour to the countryside.
And in
summer it is fascinating when the gold of the morning sun
flatter the snow capped mountaintops. The weather gods provide
the gold and sunny days during which bird songs and gurgling
mountain streams blend in a strange enchanted symphony. The onset of
monsoon
transmutes the landscape into a verdant miracle. Clouds
wrap the mountain anges making them invisible and even descend down
to valley declaring a ‘white out’. In the wilderness of jungle the
gentle breeze move the
fumes
of wispy clouds making the pines whisper secret sounds that the gods
alone know. It alternates between swirling mountain mist and the
soft, silky, soothing dripping of falling rain.

In autumn
when beauty ripens, it is gorgeous. Nature in gold, red and
scarlet colours turns the valley in to a veritable paradise. Then comes
the snowy brooding silence of winter when
valley is locked in snow so deep that most roads are closed,
and only a few
brave trekkers venture forth to delight in the white,
unsullied and virginal beauty of the land. It becomes an
expanse of pure white serenity breathing peace and
contentment. People here are romantic and carefree. The
majesty of the snow peaks, the harshness of the long winter
months and Nature’s bounty during the short span of the colourful spring and summer have, perhaps given the people of
region a strange blend of humility, sensitivity, and hardiness
to survive against heavy odds.
